Frequently asked questions
What is a banneton?
A banneton is a proving basket used to support dough as it ferments and develops before baking. During this time, the dough matures, develops flavour, builds structure, and gains strength. The banneton's job is to support the dough and encourage the dough to rise instead of spreading out. Proving with a Banneton helps your bakery achieve consistent size and shaped loaves every bake.
Are Bread Basket Company bannetons Australian made?
Absolutely. Our bannetons are proudly made on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australian and our business is 100% Australian owned. They're designed for the Australian climate and are ideal for bakeries, baking schools, micro bakeries, home bakers, and anyone who appreciates quality products built to withstand real-world baking.
Why should bakeries choose Bread Basket Company bannetons?
Because bakery owners have enough to worry about without babysitting proving baskets. Our bannetons are Australian made, commercial quality, dishwasher safe, stackable, hygienic, and backed by a 10-year warranty. They are designed for consistent proving, easier cleaning, tight bakery spaces, and reliable daily use.
Are your bannetons suitable for commercial bakeries?
Definitely. Whether you're producing a dozen loaves a day or several thousand, our bannetons are designed for consistent performance in busy bakery environments. They're durable, easy to clean, easy to store, built for daily use, and our 10-Year Warranty gives you peace of mind. We had them designed and made for our own busy wholesale sourdough bakery, so you can be totally confident they will do the job for yours.
What are your bannetons made from?
Our bannetons are made from premium food-grade polypropylene (PP), a material widely used throughout the food industry. It's durable, odourless, food safe, and tough enough to handle years of commercial baking without complaint.
Are plastic bannetons better than rattan bannetons?
We'll let you decide, but we think spending less time cleaning and more time baking is a pretty good start. Unlike traditional rattan baskets, our bannetons are dishwasher safe, stack neatly, resist mould, and are incredibly easy to maintain. They deliver the traditional look bakers love, without some of the headaches that come with natural materials.
Are your bannetons dishwasher safe?
Yes. Our plastic bannetons are dishwasher safe and easy to clean, making them suitable for commercial bakeries, micro bakeries, and home sourdough bakers.
Are your bannetons hygienic?
Very. Because they're made from durable food-grade plastic, they're easy to clean and dry quickly. That means fewer places for flour, moisture, and unwanted visitors to hang around compared with traditional natural-fibre baskets.
How do I clean a plastic banneton?
Easy. A damp cloth is usually enough between bakes. For a deeper clean, place them in the dishwasher and let the machine do the hard work. No scrubbing and no complicated maintenance routines. No need to employ someone to keep these bannetons clean. 😊
Will my bread still get the traditional artisan pattern?
Yes, if used without a liner. Our bannetons are specifically designed to produce the traditional artisan appearance bakers expect while providing all the practical benefits of modern food-grade materials. If using a liner you will have a smooth surface perfect to create your own scoring or patterns.
How long do your bannetons last?
They're built for the long haul. In fact, we're confident enough to back them with a 10-year warranty.
Will they save space in my bakery?
Absolutely. Our bannetons stack neatly when not in use, helping free up valuable shelf and bench space. If you've ever played bakery Tetris with traditional proving baskets, you'll appreciate the difference.
Do your bannetons support even proving?
Yes. Our bannetons feature a ventilated design that supports even proving and consistent results across batches.
Why are stackable bannetons useful for bakeries?
Stackable bannetons help bakeries save space by storing neatly when not in use. This is especially useful for commercial bakeries with tight bench space, limited shelving, and high-volume production.
Do I need a banneton liner?
A banneton liner is optional, but it can help release the dough after proving. Both Cotton Liners and Bakers Hair-nets can also support a cleaner, lower-handling proving process, however there are many bakers, especially micro and home bakers, that don’t use a liner. They simply coat the dough generously in rice flour or similar before placing it in the proving basket.
Can I use bakers hair nets as banneton liners?
Yes. Bakers hair nets are widely used in commercial bakeries and are suitable for both the round and oval bannetons. They are clean, hygienic and low cost option.
Do your bannetons come with a warranty?
Yes. We back our bannetons come with a 10-year warranty. Our bannetons were designed and made by a baker, for bakers, so we very happy to back our quality.
What banneton shapes do you offer?
We offer both round bannetons and oval bannetons, allowing bakers to choose the best proving basket shape for their dough size, loaf style, and production needs.
